UMW records healthy automotive sales in January

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Group is encouraged over its sales performance in 2021 with both UMW Toyota Motor and Perodua registering healthy January sales numbers on the back of the extension of the sales tax exemption initiative.

Over the month, the Toyota Vios, Yaris and Hilux remained UMW Toyota Motor's best-selling models. Improved versions of the Vios and Yaris were launched on Dec 17, 2020. Meanwhile, Perodua targets to sell 240,000 units in 2021, which will be a 9% increase over the 220,163 units sold last year. According to UMW, the sustained demand for automotives was owing to the government's extension of the sales tax waiver for locally assembled cars and the 50% sales tax exemption on imported cars to June 30, 2021.
