Plans to raise building heights and encourage night-life in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs have provoked opposition from residents | smh_andrew

Plans to raise building heights and encourage night-life in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs have provoked opposition from residents weeks after council elections dominated by concerns about overdevelopment.in Double Bay includes raising building heights to six storeys, or 21.5 metres, on certain sites and recommends mixed-use development to foster the area’s nighttime economy.

The council will decide whether to proceed with the draft strategy in early 2022 after reviewing feedback from residents, property owners and local businesses, he said. “Given the rapid increase in prices, particularly in premium suburbs like Double Bay, prices will not be going down any time soon,” he said.

Cr Silcocks said an earlier developer-led study had suggested the only way to revitalise Double Bay following the redevelopment of Westfield Bondi Junction was to increase building heights to accommodate more apartments - “as if high-rise apartments elicit the feeling of a village or make it more enticing to tourists and shoppers”.
