Hundreds of empty, parked cars go up in flames in France each New Year's Eve, set afire by young revellers, a much-lamented tradition that appeared in decline this year, which saw only 874 vehicles burned.

1,316 vehicles went up in flames on new Year's Eve 2019The number of cars burned overnight has declined compared to New Year's Eve 2019, when 1,316 vehicles went up in flames, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Saturday on Twitter.

Fewer arson attacks occurred because of massive police presence on cities' streets this New Year's Eve, enforcing law and order and restrictions on public gatherings and wearing face masks, as infections driven by the fast-spreading omicron variant surge, he said. There is no information on burned cars last year because of a nation-wide lockdown in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.Like many countries, France sees cars set on fire during the year for many reasons, including gangs hiding clues of their crimes and people making false insurance claims. The practice reportedly began in earnest among youths — often in poor neighbourhoods — in the 1990s in the region around Strasbourg in eastern France.

It also became a voice of protest during the fiery unrest by despairing youths from housing projects that swept France in the fall of 2005.

This tradition was only recently introduced to France, and Paris especially, and reflects France’s growing cultural diversity. It’s a bit like the Christmas tradition in London where random strangers are knifed to death. And the food! The food is amazing.

They don't care about the environment. Imagine how much toxic gas was expounded into the atmosphere. They are a virus race that usurp smaller nations and steals their wealth.

French stupidity, who'd have guessed. What does burning cars have to do with Christmas. What does anything these days have to do with Christmas

's amazing that highly educated professionals who work as doctors and engineers might be responsible for such a thing

Let me guess. Moroccans? And no I'm not racist because I just paid a moroccan $20 on fivver.🙂

The French just love burning cars. Yellow vest protests December 2018👇

Gangs of non specific humans burning your property. ABC: “bring in the new year with this hot new French tradition! refreshed”

'900 vehicles were set on fire and more than 250 people... suburbs with large immigrant populations on the fringes of Paris'. Europe needs to sort out immigration and youth engagement, that's wild.

No words.

Most cars on Australian roads probably should be torched, ideally with the owners still in them, because there is something criminally wrong with buying a piece of shit. I am willing to draft a list of cars that are acceptable for Australian streets.

Good encouragement to get rid of cars.
