Plugin Vehicles At Record 13.3% In Italy In December, But Car Market In Crisis

2021 ended on mixed notes for Italy’s car market. Amidst the continued, stellar growth of electric mobility throughout the Old Continent, EV sales finished the year at record share levels in all major European markets. While Italy followed suit in share terms, total sales reached worrying lows throughout powertrain segments.complete 2021’s picture with somewhat gloomier colours than could have been expected.

PHEVs shared a similar fate to full electrics. The 5,657 units recorded in December meant a solid 6.4% market share, which is the highest figure plug-in hybrids have ever reached in Italy . At the same time, this month’s result makes for an 11.3% YoY decline from twelve months ago, when 6,381 registrations rocked the market.

The Fiat 500e ends the year as it started it, as the best selling BEV of them all , with 887 registrations. The cheap Dacia Spring followed at a close second, with 805 sales, a result far from recent records. The Renault Twingo ZE completed the podium with 519 registrations, confirming how important minis are for the Italian market.
