New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 21% of all new cars licensed for the first time in January were electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).

The CSO said the number of new electric cars licensed more than doubled from 739 in January of last year to 1,813 in January of this year.

It noted that new Plug-in hybrid electric cars licensed grew by 82% in January 2022 compared with January last year. At the same time the number of new diesel cars is decreasing - 20% of new private cars licensed in January were diesel compared with 34% in the same month in 2021. Today's CSO figures show that a total of 15,814 new private cars were licensed in January, a reduction of 6.7% on the same month last year.

The number of used private cars licensed in January 2022 sank by 54.6% to 3,686 compared to 8,126 in January 2021, they also reveal.
