Motorists who have been unable to renew their expired driving licence cards can breathe a temporary sigh of relief after transport minister Fikile Mbalula extended the grace period by two weeks.
He said the transport department was on track with the production of outstanding licence cards and the bottleneck experienced between November 2021 and January 2022 due to a broken card printing machine would be cleared by April. “It leaves hundreds of thousands of drivers without the necessary documents to be on the road legally,” he said.
To deal with the backlog, the operating times of driving licence testing centres will be extended to seven days a week, while the Driving Licence Card Account is operating 24-hours a day to produce cards.
Even President Ramaphosa is struggling to renew his driver's licence.
