Lex Forsyth, general manager of Janus Electric, says he is “extremely disappointed” in the lack of interest from both the federal and state governments in using electric batteries to power trucks.“I really question our government’s true integrity around carbon zero and the seriousness of it because it can be done right here and now.”
“A truck comes in, you don’t care which battery you get as long as it’s fully charged. A battery could belong to Macquarie, it could belong to a super fund.” The group’s proposals “met with a little bit of resistance” from truck manufacturers, so it bought five trucks to show potential customers how the batteries work. It has 10 confirmed orders for battery conversions, another 16 coming through, and inquiries for a further 150, Mr Forsyth said.
The CEFC said it had financed a range of electric vehicles, including giving $5 million to SEA Electric to convert trucks and commercial vans into electric vehicles; $5 million to battery technology producer 3ME Technology to electrify mining vehicles; and $24.5 million to help finance the electrification of the NSW bus fleet.
