One way to avoid the pain at the pump is to never have to go there. Katie Mitchell bought an electric car in January, and says she's now saving hundreds of dollars a month by charging up instead of filling up. "It's one of the things that I give thanks for," she said of her decision.

A new CBS News poll found 59% of Americans would or might consider buying an electric vehicle. Those who would cited the environment andBut a lot of the electric models that automakers keep announcing are not yet available, and a looming battery shortage could pump the brakes even more. Tesla is the electric vehicle market leader, but the waiting list for its cars is several months long.

"People are begging for a better, less fuel intensive way to drive to be divorced of fuel pump prices, and yet finding any new car — let alone a model that's electric — is so hard right now," Brian Cooley, editor at large for CNET, told CBS News. The CEO of electric vehicle automaker Rivian, which is struggling to deliver its new vehicles, warned this could be worse than the current chip shortage as demand for the materials inside the batteries — specifically lithium — skyrockets.

The U.S. has just one lithium-producing mine in southern Nevada, providing less than 2% of the world's supply. "I feel a little bit like an accidental genius," she said.

Well good for her.. She like alot of people don't realize majority of Americans CANT AFFORD ELECTRIC CARS!! Also to make an e-car you have to STRIP MIND the surface to acquire lithium for the battery. Imagine: Everyone has an e-car but no trees or grass. Nothing but desolation!

Average cost $55,000 and Batteries last approximately 100,000 miles. Cost to replace, $13,000. Sorry, still not buying.

Sure wish I bought electric car. I just bought car that takes gasoline.

Do electric cars pay road use taxes? Do electric cars get taxpayer subsidies?

So electric cars cost the same as gas powered ones

Ask Katie to loan me 30k with 4% interest. That’s about 6% interest less than the bank. And I’m on board.

Same, had enough f u fossil industry

Good!

Ifb

Look at what’s happening now , and who controlling all Americans consumers and gouging them , laughing all the way to the banks, making millions and billions in record profits…change looks hard to those already getting rob from…sad….

I call BS. Is she getting her electricity free? Everyone I know with an EV says it's about an even wash (electric bill vs fuel bill). You purchase an EV to save the planet, not your pocketbook.

Yeah but the bmv charges a fee $200 in Ohio! Crazy!

It's a nice idea, but where's the infrastructure for charging in many states? We barely have nice streets or bridges to drive on.

Katie Mitchell is sure one brain dead lady.

Most people v don’t have the money to buy an electric car which costs more. Many of that line in complex can’t instal chargers

Katie Mitchell isn’t the only one who’s done that. What’s new?
