South Africans love a bakkie – and why shouldn’t we, it’s the perfect vehicle for our roads and terrain. The Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger are among the best-selling passenger vehicles in the country, month after month, year after year. And they despite serving their utility purpose, they are being made rather pretty of late, with the interior of the high-end models rivaling luxury vehicles on the market.

report shows that the sweet spot for vehicle financing in the country is between R200,000 and R300,000. Those who spend more than R600,000 are among a select few – 7%.

And increasingly, the budget required for a double cab bakkie in South Africa has increased amid higher demand, and better build quality and technology. Mercedes-Benz introduced the country to the first R1 million bakkie, which has since halted production, globally. It has become a collector’s item, and perhaps a future classic.

Most recently, Jeep launched its Gladiator pickup in South Africa in June at a cost of R1,259,900, making it the most expensive ‘bakkie’ in the country, but not without rivals at that price point.Note: Other common brands such as Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan even with all the added accessories do not reach above R900,000 in price.
