The ACT government's announcement that the sale of new petrol cars will be banned in the territory in 2035 is causing affordability concerns for Canberrans on lower incomes.

Single Canberra mother of three Margaret Limn recently had to drop clients from her small cleaning business in order to spend more time looking after her family.

"My two teenage boys are growing all the time so they take it in turns to see who needs shoes or clothes or things like that," she says.Margaret says her kids know things are tight and sometimes volunteer to go without something new. "I do all the small things that — I can recycle and repurpose stuff as much as possible, and I try to find budget-friendly ways [to] help the environment," she says.'Feels like they are trying to edge the poorer people out of town'

2022-2030 Zero Emissions Vehicles Strategy also includes a "long-term" plan to overhaul how Canberrans will pay their car registration"It's going to make it really hard for people who can't afford an electric car, and it sounds like because of that reason they are going to be penalised for it," she says.

ACOSS acting chief executive Edwina MacDonald says people on lower incomes could be penalised by charging registration based on emissions.

Canberra is a lovely place with kind people. Will EVs help at all? Dirty mining, lack of transparency with old battery recycling... maybe building more apartments in town, preventing over use of cars could help than more vehicles.

ACT eliminating freedom of choice. Sound like communism to me.

Don’t worry pocockdavid will get on to this and stop unsustainable levels of immigration. He’s a sensible bloke. Will do the right thing.

EVs are relatively new, and as such there aren't many (if any?) around on the second-hand market, yet.. The story is biased in that 'poorer people' (as mentioned in the story) actually wouldn't be going out and buying brand new vehicles anyway, petroleum based nor ev.

$1600 pw poor?

Byoz01 Please explain how and where all these EV’s are going to be charged? There will not be enough power for homes or businesses, with our current pollies!

Good. The crime and social problems will be edged out with them.

Paying $2.65 per ltr for petrol is also a great way to keep people poor! Average age of all vehicles registered in Australia was 10.1 years, unchanged since 2015. (source - ABS) If prober incentives in place there should be good secondhand market of EVs.

The article makes several unwarranted assumptions: 1. A ban on the sale of new petrol vehicles does not mean secondhand petrol vehicles will not be sold. 2. Second hand EVs may be cheaper to purchase than new petrol vehicles. They WILL be cheaper to maintain and run.

They're already doing that with the house prices.

“Under the [ACT] government’s plan, the sale of new petrol cars would be banned from 2035… but the sale of second-hand petrol cars or driving a fossil fuel-powered car on ACT roads would remain legal” So what is she worried about? IMO rego fees based on emissions is sensible

. EVs are NOT green. EVs consume energy. Where that recharge energy comes from determines if it is green or not. Most EVs are cutrently coal-powered - and having more EVs does not increase solar or hydro power AT ALL. In fact the big EVs use more FOSSIL FUELS than most ICE. .

. Coal-powered luxury cars bring prioritised at the expense of the poor. EVs at all price points will be available by 2030. Pretending the ACT can make any impact on EV supply is ignorant. Demand isn't the problem so why have a demand-side policy? ACT politicians dopey AF! .

Is it just me but doesn’t it start in 2035? 12 years away? Why the stress now. The last two and a half years have shown us an awful lot is going to change between now and then - who know what EV’s will cost then. Why the panic?

Don't worry, i just heard a lot of second hand EVs will be on the market by then.. no doubt in need of an imminent $10,000 battery replacement

Whoa, ABC news really competing agains newscorp for anti EV article of the week here. Someone currently earning $1600/w worried they won't be able to afford a brand new EV in 13 years time......

2035. How much notice do you need?

A business owner is 'classed' as 'poor' & on 'low incomes' 🤦 You at the ABC should interview actual 'poor ppl on low incomes' that will be affected! Not saying that others won't be affected, but shyte all we see is business owners having a whinge how things affect them! 🙄

Surely this story should mention what type of vehicle she currently drives and how much she paid for it so readers can determine if she is being truthful. Would she be buying a new vehicle? If not then this makes no difference. Is she not able to go to NSW and buy a vehicle?

Another green energy politics. This is and has always been part of change. 30 years ago mobile phones , PCs , flying etc etc always been for the well off Overtime, mass production brings these products to affordable levels for most but never the very poor.

All the green agenda is set up so the rich can keep their lifestyle and the poor become a poor subject.

Oh rubbish. This does not stop anyone from buying a secondhand petrol car or buying a new/secondhand car from another state.

Poor people should subsidise rich peoples EVs.

Because that what elite socialists do....marginalize the lower income people.

Q-town is where Canberra’s “riff raff” have traditionally been herded. I’m sure the petrol guzzlers will continue to hold sway for many decades to come - up and down the aptly named Monaro Street. Queanbeyan4ever

Given ALL of the major motor vehicle manufacturers are planning to phase out petrol/diesel cars by 2030-2035 you will not be able to buy a new one Also if you think fuel is expensive now you will be in for a rude shock… But facts hey don’t let them get in the way of Nimbyism..

Stop whinging. Move way out of town and come in to clean the houses of migrants Labor are bringing in. This is the workers party. They've got your back on this.

How come centerlink is poorer. Lucrative benefits and support from federal/state/councils. Jobs being outsourced and high work visa and migrations. Access to cheaper overseas labor market. Despite of Australias best education and experience we face severe unnecessary competition

It’s becoming impossible to live in NSW or the ACT if you don’t own your home or earn a big enough wage to leave you with money after rent & bills. Rents are up to $200+ a week cheaper in Victoria & allowing pets is common. Electric cars are now just another kick in the teeth.

Requiring the purchase of unaffordable products and then saying, hey, we'll loan you the money, is not helping. Interest be damned, some people can't afford repayments on $40K vehicle.

Looks at watch...2035 is a long way away...carries on. You can comfortably save up to $3.5k a year on running costs with a EV at today's petrol and servicing costs.

This is what is colloquially known as codswallop 😑

Is 1.6k per week poor? Is this before or after tax? Obv having 3 kids and renting (which is costing 750 per week) makes it alot less

Given the ACT proximity to NSW how hard would it be for someone to purchase a ICE car in NSW and just bring it in. The rules just preclude selling one in ACT not possessing or bringing one in.

Well you either become a leftist elite or a slave that works for them, choice is yours, don't worry, if you own nothing you will be happy..

Lots of used E cars available by 2035

Wait wut ACT stopping sale of *new* petrol cars If you can afford a *new* car then you are definitely not being edged out - and otherwise you can buy a *used* petrol car for a long time after 2035

Mass immigration displaces Australians. If you voted for lnp, Labor or Greens, this is YOUR FAULT
