National Union of Metalworkers of SA secretary-general Irvin Jim has lashed out at employers involved in automotive sector wage talks, accusing their representatives of provoking the union to strike by failing to table a wage offer.
The union is negotiating with the Retail Motor Industries and the Fuel Retail Associations in talks which will affect the wages of 306 000 workers at auto manufacturers, car dealerships, and petrol stations. Numsa represents at least 90 000 members in the sector. "We reject the narrative that members of the working class should accept poverty wages. The working class is responsible for creating wealth in this country. When economists report GDP growth, they are referring to the sweat and blood and toil of the working class," said Jim.
"The management keeps demanding that we must reduce our demand, but they have put nothing on the table. They have not made an offer. They may as well have put zero on the table! The agreement expires on 30 August and it is obvious that employers are using delay tactics," Jim said.READ | Jim called on small business owners to put pressure on the FRA and the RMI to return to the negotiation table with a meaningful offer, or the union would have to embark on a nationwide strike.
Fin24 No news, Irwin is constantly lashing out. It's how he speaks.
