At a time of climate crisis, aiming for car-free areas is an important goal and one European cities are achieving

Photograph: Nick Bradshaw/The Irish TimesElectric vehicles are not a silver bullet for fixing Ireland’s unsustainable transport system.

To reduce car dependence, the vast road space they take up in cities, town and villages must be reallocated to bikes, public transport, and the public realm Schoolbus services should be dramatically improved to reverse this: only 10 per cent of primary school students take the bus, a rate that has been continuously declining. This would also reduce traffic around schools and free parents of the daily school-run grid. Now, only one quarter of primary school student cycle or walk to school, a rate that has halved since 1986.

The Salthill cycle lane debacle shows the entrenched attachment to cars among influential decision-makers, despite all their downsides. Large-scale active and public transport systems will not be achieved without strong political leadership and bottom-up support. At the same time, the legacy of rural housing sprawl and poor public transport infrastructure means that many are locked into car use for the foreseeable future.

Sales of pure battery electric vehicles are nearly doubling each year, reaching a 13 per cent market share so far this year, despite being hampered by the global chip shortage.

The price of electric cars is the problem… out of reach from majority…

Ye because electricity and electric cars manufacturing has absolutely zero damage to the environment 🤪🤪..to all you clown greenies I am being sarcastic btw

We live on an island on the periphery of Europe. How’s is everything transported here?

Bought off and paid for IT, any chance you are in financial difficulties and will go out of business soon, here’s hoping.

Got the order?

Are the greens paying the IT to write this shite.

The green scam is dying a slow death. The media and this farce of a government will get their answer soon. Mass protesting on its way

EVs sure are planet friendly, Can you see It Yet, climate change?

Will you stop advertising scam Hybrids?

EcoEye

While electric cars are individually better for the environment. How is a population with all electric vehicles better for the environment? Seriously, given how electricity is produced. Ireland would need nuclear power stations to power all the vehicles

This is the same day on which the IT also writes an inflammatory article about the proposed Clontarf cycle lane. Highlighting only the road closure, not the numerous benefits the cycle lane will bring.

Fine, get all the tds to give back their big ministerial cars and give them all a Toyota Prius each That sounds like a good start, lead by example and all that

Yes because we’ve all money down the couch for new electric vehicles. I’m sure this statement is more laughable than laudable.

In my local town the are paths that go 20 feet and none on the opposing side of the road. We have a lot of work to do to convince people to cycle in Ireland. Isn't there water mains, sewerage, footpath, bus lane, and general realm improvements too? The place is a total mess, it's badly in need of redevelopment.
