Rishi Sunak claims he would “end the war on motorists” by reviewing low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) schemes that close off residential roads to general traffic

said: “The UK is a passionate driving nation because driving provides freedom. Whilst transport in this country needs to get greener, that doesn’t mean it has to be at the expense of driving cars.

“Smart motorways are unpopular because they are unsafe. We need to listen to drivers, be on their side and stop with the pursuit of policies that go against common sense. Smart motorways were first introduced in England in 2014 as a cheaper way of increasing capacity compared with widening carriageways. There are about 375 miles of smart motorway in England, including 235 miles without a hard shoulder.
