NASCAR has mandated some changes ahead of this weekend in their latest effort to combat fires on the NextGen cars:

This latest update is effective immediately, and will be put in place for the race in Kansas this weekend. Optional Intumescent coatings complying with SFI 54.1 are permitted for the underside of the Lower Crush Panels, inside the Exhaust Cover Panels and the upper surface of the Rocker Box. These locations are shown below.Mandatory A lateral seal/dam must be installed between the back of the front clip weight box and the top of the splitter panel .

The purpose of this dam is to reduce the migration of tire debris from the splitter area.Mandatory The lower front section of the right side back stop panel must be trimmed as indicated. The section that is removed must be replaced by a 14 gauge stainless steel panel. The steel panel must be mounted inboard of the polymer panel. Files for the stainless steel panel and the trimmed version of the polymer panel are attached.

NASCAR says it's "unacceptable" for Next Gen cars to catch fireA NASCAR official on Tuesday said it was “unacceptable” for the NextGen cars to catch on fire, but took issue with Kevin Harvick’s claim that the sanctioning body “don’t care.” Nascar cares alright but they just don't care enough to fix it. This reminds me when NASCAR said they cared about safety after Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin were killed at New Hampshire. Yet, didn’t mandate the HANS device the following yr, until Dale Sr was killed in the same exact manner. After that we had the HANS device and safer barriers.
