For a snapshot of what McKenney’s cycling plan might look like, grahamctv jumped on his bike with a mini camera to look at the patchwork of protection in the east end. ottnews otttraffic

Coun. Catherine McKenney’s plan to spend big on cycling if elected mayor has jolted Ottawa’s mayoral campaign out of a late summer slumber.just on cycling grabbed a lot of attention online and on the streets. That is $250 million, just on cycling infrastructure. McKenney says it will fundamentally transform Ottawa into a world-class cycling city.

Candidate Bob Chiarelli rejected both plans as too expensive and says he will not earmark new money for cycling infrastructure at all. Instead, he is pledging to cancel any new road construction and fix Ottawa's current roads, which he says are in horrible condition.

So many bigger battles in Ottawa. Cycling is least of my worries.

Cyclist will always win on paper and on social media. But in the real world!! Well a car or truck. Is much heavier and will never lose!!

I have a car and I ride bikes. It's not about one vs the other.

You do a disservice to frame the issue as 'cars versus bikes.' Indeed, if you frame it that way - you're clearly of the 'car' camp.

So far the campaign has been about smaller issues. Watson did a good intensification plan. What are the mayoral candidates vision for Ottawa? LeBreton Flats, Wellington St, Sparks St, The Market?

The city needs to deal with the bike theft problems. It’s difficult to convince more people to use their bikes when the thieves are taking them.

grahamctv As a 60 old, who lives in the burbs but works downtown, I will not being riding bikes. I’m sick of bike BS. We live in the north. Bikes are for children who want summer fun. I want fixed roads and will donate 1k to any politician that puts cars first.

grahamctv But Graham fails to address the Brian Coburn Option 7 in his reporting- which would provide essential cycling and transit link-a link that McKenney opposes. option7 _MarkSutcliffe

grahamctv no good to most of us rurals and sunburbia given distance and snow ...

grahamctv Such a sweet story, CTV News, but goodness do your job. Ask the questions about how she intends on paying for this. A world-class cycling city, being first on the market, blah, blah, blah... those are just ego-boosting moves. Let's deal with more imp issues to help all citizens.

grahamctv vehicles own the roads and will always own the roads. This plan will cost $$$$$, and it'll be waste when there are more pressing issues to worry about.

grahamctv The thing speaks for itself...the bicycle age has arrived. Now put a motor on it.
