It’s been a while since the world has seen a special edition named after a racing driver; kudos to anyone that could remember the ‘British Legends Edition’ Porsche 911s attributed to Derek Bell, Nick Tandy and Richard Attwood. Now Alpine has resurrected a niche we thought disappeared with the C4 by Loeb - say hello toOn the face of it, this ticks all the boxes to qualify as another special edition cashing in on a famous racy face.
But there is more to the A110 R Fernando Alonso than meets the eye. The regular R is already a mouth-watering prospect, what with its slender kerbweight and track focus, and the Alonso ups the ante further. Apparently signed off by the two-time champ himself at Barcelona, this A110 R can have its ride height dropped by 10mm - for track use only, you understand - thanks to a shim at the base of the springs.
Alright, so it’s hardly a huge overhaul, but it’s something. Additional Alonso-specific tweaks include a bit more paint for the carbon bits , more orange inside and a 1-32 numbered plaque that details the date and location of each race win. Additionally, Alonso’s motto - “There is more than one path to the top of the mountain” - has been etched into the sun visor, so, for heaven’s sake, don’t forget your sunglasses. You don’t want to have to see that any more than once to check they’ve actually done it.
For the moment, exactly how the 32 A110s will be divvied up among the world’s Alpine and Alonso enthusiasts hasn’t been confirmed. Every single one of the few, however, will get a signed replica helmet, the lucky devils.
