Thieves are using relay attacks and connecting to the vehicle’s on-board diagnostic port to reprogram key fobs while organized crime networks are stealing vehicles in greater volume for export internationally, with Montreal the major exit port. More than 1,000 stolen vehicles valued at more than $40 million were recovered from the Port of Montreal in 2021, Équité Association said.Article content
“Not only does auto theft cost Canadians millions of dollars each year, the proceeds of this illegal activity also fund organized crime and terrorism, both domestically and internationally,” the not-for-profit’s vice president of investigative services, Bryan Gast, said in a media release. Équité Association is now tracking both the number of vehicles stolen and the rate at which they are stolen. The Honda CR-V tops the national list with 4,117 thefts, for example, but the Lexus RX series had a higher theft percentage rate at 6.4 per cent — and that rate is even higher, at 9.4 per cent, in Ontario.Insured vehicles
