Rental car company Hertz will pay $168 million to hundreds of innocent customers it falsely accused of stealing vehicles. For some customers, it resulted in felony charges and jail time.

Of the company's 25 million rental transactions, 0.014% are reported stolen each year, or about 3,500, the company has said.

Another customer in Florida extended her Hertz rental four times — but the car was reported stolen before the end of the extension period in spite of text message communications with a Hertz employee confirming her plans to return it, court records show. She was jailed for 37 days, separated from her two children and missing her nursing school graduation, the suit said.

Crazy...

Yet rental companies have tons of outstanding cars (not returned at end of term) that technically are stolen because the law in NY at least says that violation of rental agreements such as Letting friends drive the car is unauthorized use of a vehicle

Every single executive should spend at least 30 days in jail & each arrested individual should receive at least 1 million dollars each. This is insane!

It should be jail time for Hertz executives They should be facing charges, not paying fines

A woman lost her unborn baby in jail for a crime that they fabricated.

There should be jail time and not only fines for these gross injustices. If leaders of companies were incarcerated for acts by the company, these things would never happen to another innocent person.

Last year, Hertz generated over $7 billion in revenue. $168 million is just 2.4% of that.

Corporate executives need to go to jail

Never rent from Hertz - that’s the lesson

what in the world 😑 someone put them in jail too sheesh 😒

Fat load of good it does the people they landed in jail.

Those OJ Simpson commercials for Hertz really set a tone.

168 million isn't enough for the damage to customers, THEY CREATED, AND HAD FOLKS THROWN IN JAIL FOR!!😢🤦‍♂️

Lesson here…. NEVER RENT A CAR FROM HERTZ!

364 people.. that is awful.

hertz also pocketed an extra $400 from us at their location in Cancun last February - with no phone number to call and get hold of the location and zero customer service response

Somehow I wish I was one of these people 😕

$168M isn't enough! Hertz well-known for being a bottom-of-the-barrel rental car company! While the false arrests were the most egregious other unsavory business practices including renting known defective and damaged vehicles. Avoid using them whenever possible!

Nah that's not enough. They should be paying tens of millions to EACH person they hurt. And it should come out of the C-suites salary. So they get a $1 a year til the fines are paid.

money down the drain...

The only time companies get in any real trouble is when their executives defraud shareholders ie Enron, Waste Management, Qwest Communications, etc. Nobody ever goes to jail when the common man gets fucked over ie 2008 financial crisis. Not surprised here.

I'll make sure I never do any business with them.

Bet it was a settlement. Bet part of the settlement protects Hertz from lawsuits by individuals.

Pretty neat that they filed 100s of false police reports and their penalty is a fine and no actions against their ability to do business. IE, 'you can continue doing exactly what you've been doing if you're cool paying $160 million every once in a while'.

This is appalling! The fact that they got away with it for so long. Wtf

Cool and normal

why are corporations above the law?

It’s pretty incredible what corporations can get away with. Maybe a society that values profit over people 100% of the time isn’t a healthy one.

Seems like a fair punishments for filing false police reports and not caring if their customers' lives were ruined.

That seems pretty low if people got felony charges.

Uh, what?
