Italy’s transport and infrastructure minister Matteo Salvini has potentially thrown a spanner into European Union plans to halt sales of fossil-fuelled cars by 2035. Salvini was in Brussels on December 5 to discuss transport with his EU27 counterparts and the European Commission’s Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean.
“I spoke with the EU commissioner and with my French and German colleagues about reviewing the ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2035,” Salvini is reported to have said,The bombastic far-right League leader claimed that the proposed ban “makes no economic, environmental or social sense.” When it was proposed in July 2021, the EU law met resistance from carmakers and the European car industry association ACEA. The trade body called for internal combustion engines to play a role in a low-carbon transition. In October this year the EU struck a deal continue with the proposed ban on the sale—but not use—of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.
