Many claims are being made of automated cars, but full automation still isn’t here. Will private cars that never need a driver ever reach the market?

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class now has a model that can drive around totally unaided – as long as you are in one specific car park in Germany. It is an impressive achievement, but how far have we really come since.

No too much algorithm...

No they can’t make the stuff hack proof .

In a time when minimum wage from one job can't pay for rent, they want to remove the taxi driver from the human employment chain and 'mechanize' it.

No

“Ever”

Yes, as soon as the AI can be proven to a more safe driver than a person. I predict within ten years.

Likely, not until the road infrastructure is redesigned.

I hope not they’re making us extinct

If you miss a payment car drives itself back to seller or drives you to the debt collector

'full automation still isn’t here' because what for

Call me old but I like being in control of my transportation. 😎

No

WakingLifeDream Rethink trains

elonmusk?

Why would anyone want one, except to stand out?

I Ddon^t want one. With cars, I have control issues. 🤷‍♀️

That's okay we should be building trains and public transit instead :)

I would never want a self driving car. Its the dumbest idea in automotive hishory

I think the initial hype (often by Musk) 5+ish years ago was very naïve. That said, I do think Tesla will be the first to market and I could see it happening in 2-3 years. The reason I say Tesla is their data-gathering is in a VERY far lead over anyone else.

Not for another couple of decades at least. There are simply too many variables, while a machine has no comprehension of what a human is - or anything - for that matter. In the meantime drivers will have to be satisfied with rows of flashing lights which simply look pretty

Yes

They can't keep the traffic lights working.

No,because of the word 'terrain'. The vehicle's automated computer has a hard time mapping and following the terrain.

Getting closer all the time...

Inventing a self-driving car is basically inventing an animal. We're not there yet. Not too far, but not there yet.

The tech is HERE. They just need to use an effective security system that doesn't involve humans, as that's always the flaw. Wireless coms-works, road following systems - works, swarm drone tech- here and works. Implement that instead of killing folk

Nobody's ever cared

You need to speak with elonmusk

It’s called a taxi. An Uber. A Lyft. Way cheaper than self driving and guess what: no repairs, no insurance, no aggravation.

Never, once fully automated cars will be a subscription service.

never? sounds a bit.. clickbaity

Party poopers! Just kidding 😊

Never is a long time.

Self driving cars will never happen. Whilst humans are involved anyhow but AI transport - you bet.

How about just upping public transportation instead, which would help get cars off to he road. Totally automated cars are for folk with $ to burn.

'Ever'? Yes.

The question is idiotic. “Ever”. Yes. The answer is yes it will definitely happen. “When” is the question

Anti-science becoming the new science ...sad !

The idea of the automated highway (autobahn) was independent of mainstream traffic. An electronic digital network. Safety in mind

We need smart roads, not just smart cars for that to happen. A network.

Yep, these have been massively hyped. Self driving is far more difficult than they would have you believe.

They already did. It is callec'Tesla'. Google it!

Its like automobile makers have already spent so much $ they need to keep going with it. You'll never be able to completely program AI to cover the infinite amount of interactions & reactions needed to drive a vehicle.

We will never fly, never go to the moon,Internets just a fad, same old naysayer diatribe thats been going on forever.the techs in its infancy and needs to mature.

Not while the 'AI' driving the car is a badly paid Filipino in a basement with a joystick

'Bouya' Y I don't know but that is the best car that I have ever seen?'

Unsubbing. Bye.

Those things are scarry. I've been in my son's a few times and he's always having to make quick adjustments to jerk the car back from going somewhere it wasn't supposed to, often the oncoming lane.

Self driving will start off like this, restricted to certain roads where only automated driving is allowed. This is a necessary transitional stage.

Not until ALL roads, streets, avenues, courts, lane-ways and driveways are resurfaced and recontoured to levels suitable for machine navigation. In a other words NEVER in my uneducated opinion.

I hope not.

No

Acho que direção e humana devem coexistir. JAMAIS a automoção substituir completamente a direção e decisão humana! Deve ser uma opção, não imposição, regra ou maioria!

'Ever' is a very long time.

Hmm, this won't age well.

Level 4 is now available & deployed in 20 cities atm & many more next year think you miss the point? it's not about private car ownership AutonomousVehicles are about SharedMobility & MaaS Unfortunately, some OEMs see this as a threat to their business model & have opted out.

Yes. In the event that the road network on which they drive provides intelligent and continuous control. Roads must also be made smart. This is the future.

No.

Your company is terrible. Thieves! Stop peoples subscriptions when they want to.

For that, the whole city infrastructure will need to be updated
