The Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan is claimed as the world’s most aerodynamically efficient road car, with a drag coefficient of just 0.20.
Why? Because EVs are typically about 400 kilograms heavier than petrol-powered cars, which is a lot of extra weight to push through the air. In November, VW announced that the ID.4, an SUV built on a bespoke EV platform, would be its first electric offering in Australia. The ID.4 has a drag coefficient of 0.28, which is impressive for a large-ish SUV, but nowhere near the figure of the Benz, or the newer and smaller Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan, which has a profile similar to the EQS and achieves 0.21.
