More self-driving cars are hitting the road in America, letting drivers relax behind the wheel. But when will Australians be driven around by their own cars?

A new law being is being developed that could allow some self-driving cars to operate legally. When Mike Rosenbaum weaves through Sydney's peak-hour traffic, stopping, starting and stopping again, he looks a lot less frazzled than drivers around him."I love it. It feels like it's almost a superpower," the Chargehound founder said.

When self-driving cars are allowed on local roads, it will follow more than a decade of testing the technology. But a new law being developed by the National Transport Commission could change that, allowing some self-driving cars to operate legally in Australia. "It's an important requirement to make sure our roads and our communities are safe but it's also quite a challenge for vehicle manufacturers to make sure not only can a car pull over safety but that it can recognise when it needs to pull over safely."Demand for electric and hybrid vehicles is at an all-time high.

After years of trials, advances and "outlandish predictions," he said many companies were re-examining their autonomous vehicle ambitions."Everyone discovered the technical problems are much harder than everyone hoped so everything has slowed down.

Dumbest idea ever.

Hopefully never

Sorry not completely sold on the idea at all Nobel technology sure but could lead to major skill loss

They will eventually make taxi-driving, and peripheral bus routes obsolete.

Sooner rather than later in QLD because they sure as hell can’t drive themselves

You don't even allow electic scooters in some states... Australia is nothing but a vassal.

When they find a new way of revenue raising. The current revenue infrastructure would be wiped out overnight. Autonomous cars would take out billions of dollars out of federal funding.

Certainly not anytime soon on the NSW Central Coast - Australia's highest per km region of deep potholes leading to significant number of cars sustaining tyres, tie rods and suspension damages No auto pilot algorithm cater for such poor crappy quality road surfaces

In about 200 years when all our roads are fixed. My car can’t even keep between the lanes as the radar can’t see the lines on our crappy roads.

We should aim for hydrogen fuel cars not EVs

Why copy America where people kill people and now people driving driverless car killing people?

We love our Tesla - certainly more relaxing on the drive to the city and in the city.

I don’t believe “AI” will ever be accountable for errors in decisions or will the programmers who decided their programming was intelligent

Lets see what people that got hit by tesla in Melbourne stepping off a tram because the car didn't understand it properly. They are not capable of self driving until properly setup for each country. TESLA doesn't do this. These cars are all taught overseas driving tweaked for Aus

Judging by some of the comments, autonomous vehicles terrify some people. I just see it as a bunch of problems that might be solved - or not. If solved, then there are advantages. For example, why own a vehicle if you can just call for one as needed?

They are not 'self-driving' - they just have automated systems to monitor functions. A driver still has to operate the unit.

Because the roads aren't dangerous enough already? Just because technology exists, doesn't mean it should be used.

'The more advanced version of Tesla's autonomous software' Please stop misinforming the public about Tesla FSD, it's NOT autonomous.

No machine could ever drive as well as I do as I actually enjoy the experience and driving is a sport good for reflexes certainly not just a mechanical activity without making many split second decisions like looking in mirrors and indicating when turning and changing lanes

Those engine bots, hope your not hacked while driving. How many security updates needed. If I miss an update will I crash. No I dont think I want one.

This is so Government can control peoples movement.

Already burdened with high cost of living. Can't afford more loans and Taxes.

My (Aussie) Tesla largely drives itself. It requires my hands on the wheel but it does all the work - steering, accelerating, braking etc. Tesla's own crash data analysis shows it's 100 times safer than a car that doesn't drive itself!

When you get Elon’s chip implanted, he can drive you too.

it doesn’t solve any problem other than laziness, absolutely pointless tech

Our roads are so bad , no computer can figure them out !

C'mon sbs, there's a bigger story here, the cars 1; are hitting people and, 2; exploding for seemingly no reason.

Self driving car hits self driving car, who pays the excess?

Never.

After I've stopped driving I hope

They don't work!

Get a wife!!!
