Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2022.A massive fire broke out at an NYPD evidence warehouse in Brooklyn on Tuesday, injuring eight people and likely destroying reams of criminal evidence, including DNA records, stretching back decades, officials said.
The blaze – which remains active – was first reported at 10:30 a.m. at the Erie Basin Auto Pound, a sprawling barge that juts off the tip of Red Hook. The storage facility holds vehicles seized by the police department, as well as evidence collected at crime scenes. “What's stored here in particular is a lot of biological evidence, we also have some e-bikes, motor vehicles, and some historic vehicles as well,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey said during a press conference on Tuesday. “It’s mainly evidence.”
While firefighters initially attacked the flames from inside, they were forced to retreat after a section of the building collapsed, according to FDNY Chief John Hodgens. Three firefighters, three EMS responders, and two civilians suffered minor injuries in the three-alarm blaze. “This fire is probably going to go on for a few days by the time we're able to fully extinguish it and get inside,” Hodgens said, pointing to the limited access points and “large amount of combustible material” inside the warehouse.More than 140 firefighters responded to the blaze, officials said. As of Tuesday afternoon, three FDNY boats continued to shoot water into the warehouse. Photos and videos showed plumes of black smoke rising over the warehouse, visible from miles away.
CheyCab Surely this is an ‘accidental’ fire
kay flock coming home
mcvey_mcvey Well, so much for that huge backlog of untested rape kits...
noreallyyall This isn't suspicious at all.
Shady Coincidence 48677232
Cuomo had to get his DNA gone quick
No such thing as “coincidence”, in a fire like this. I hope the firefighters involved, are all OK.
Here is hoping they had a backup system somewhere.
fireandbloodfic ai o anjo trabalhando sem parar
Another coincidence
PaulSorrentino3 Highly suspect.
No sprinklers is against fire codes. Will they arrest themselves?
Either arson, or they didn't get the memo about not keeping all these ebikes in one place, next to stuff that can catch fire.
Inside job👀👀👀👀
Criminal-lover tiffany_caban, can you account for your whereabouts at the time this fire started?
Alot of cops can breath easy now.
The only conspiracy is that of lax oversight about lithium ion batteries
Now a bunch of cops going free.
Since when do they need evidence to convict someone?
Massively suspicious and completely irresponsible of NYPD leadership not to properly secure evidence. There are fireproof safes there are fireproof rooms there are fire suppression systems they can handle the worst fires there was no reason for any of this
..wonder how that happens..FTP🔥
Well some innocent people hopes went up flames!
Not a coincidence
Do we have to pretend this was accidental?
Arson Judge?
'Broke out'
Most likely, this fire was intentional. They need to launch a big investigation to find out who is behind this.
Trump really didn’t anyone to see his dna
EsqMontgomery
Not suspicious at all.
This just in ...other news 10 tons of cocaine was destroyed in a suspicious fire at a NYPD evidence depot 😆😅
Ghislaine Maxwell info.
Perhaps dirty cops figured out that the evidence implicated THEM. Since the whole of NYPD is a crime gang.
Criminals are not prosecuted in NYC
how convenient 🥴
incarceratedbob 'they said it looked accidental'
Pig protection plan.
Another win for the criminals. NYC is going to get worse.
It’s a impound lot
I wonder how many rapist cops and thier hunting buddies will benefit from this 🤔
Wow what a crazy “accident”.
incarceratedbob
A lot of criminals got a lucky break today.
incarceratedbob Found them
Absolutely a coincidence
lol This movie just writes itself.
MxJrocka That’s what that was. I could see this from my window at work.
Cue the inevitable conspiracy theories... Unfortunately, in the case of the NYPD, they may very well turn out to be true.
