Toyota’s president said a silent majority of auto-industry people question whether EVs should be pursued exclusively as the future of cars

BURIRAM, Thailand— Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda said he represented a silent majority of auto-industry people who are questioning whether electric vehicles should be pursued exclusively as the future of cars.

“People involved in the auto industry are largely a silent majority,” Mr. Toyoda said Sunday to reporters in Buriram, a small agricultural town 190 miles northeast of Bangkok. “That silent majority is wondering whether EVs are really OK to have as a single option. But they think it’s the trend so they can’t speak out loudly.”

Good question. American car makers are going overboard on EVs in an effort to appear relevant.

No, hydrogen is the future.

Very smart people ! Grandpa used to say don’t put all eggs in one basket !

Electricity is here to stay. It controls internal combustion engines quite well. It is also good a propelling golf carts. It is lousy as a replacement for IC engines. The climate change clans are Marxists who want to control people. Auto makers should build both types.

I've always felt plug-in hybrids are more practical. The fuel wouldn't have to be gas, but emergencies happen and I've heard a lot of chargers are unreliable.

Hybrids are probably more interesting?

why not? In terms of efficiency, electric motor achieves 85%~90%, while internal combustion motor(gas/diesel) only has 40~50% efficiency. Any other good option so far?

Pump more oil, the lifeblood of the US

Toyota as a leader in its domain as Honda will fail as Blackberry did. Remember when they were repeating that they will be fine....Have the courage to keep evolving or History will pass

Not all countries can afford EVs much less have the infrastructure to adopt this technology. Be sensible and not only think of your own corner.

This question doesn't make any sense. You make your gasoline car, he produces his electric car, and the market will give an answer, otherwise publishing these words will only make me think he is a clown.

This question seems to wholly depend on what they predict as far as government intervention. However, unlike other makes, Toyota manufactures a fuel cell car, which makes this comment interesting as it does not solely mean gas vs electric.

Smart man ! Let GM go “all in” and watch them go bankrupt !!

Never go all EV, please! I’d like to keep my Gas powered RAV as long as the last one….at least another 10 years.

We are very eco-friendly with our hybrid cars.

There should be options. Making them the sole option seems like it could be biting them in the ass eventually.

Toyoda san ❤️

The electricity will still need a fuel source.

Internal combustion engines will be obsolete in less than one generation.

True also need to pursue hydrogen vehicles Musk just pushing his company

Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, Half of Asia, and Middle East cannot afford and their infrastructure cannot sustain EV. ToyotaMotorCorp is right.

Well if they’re silent, then how does he know?

they understand that if it was worthwhile, other companies would've done it on their own. petrol is, and will continue to be, the dominant fuel for personal conveyances around the world...

EV means that the government will control your movement and be able to track your whereabouts at all times.

And general population

Blimey, heresy. He'll soon be corrected. Long live Gasoline.

NO evs

The future of cars is your latest design cars, maglev cars, cars with built-in mini reactors. Plasma power generator. Here are the future cars. Mini sun under the hood 😉

No they should not. But it would be amazing if we could get them cheap enough so that a lot of drivers have them as their every day car, and then gas powered for longer trips

Hurry up with that stick-shift EV you promised!

I will have keep RAV4 Plug in for 7+ years, before considering a full EV next.

My personal view is that electrification of future transportation is certainly necessary, but this can only be universal and not all replacements

Why is reference only made to the carbonfootprint blah blah blah!!! what about the toxicfootprint that EVs cause.

With this position, Toyota will eventually torpedo japans entire economy

Nice that there is one honest person in the industry. Ehile the US Big 3 commit collective hari kari egged on by liberals, Toyota is actually creating consumer driven vehicles. USA killing off significant economic driver. Japan thinking smart.

It's idiotic just like wind and solar. Not viable for the overwhelming majority of the world.

Hydrogen fuel cell is a much, much better sustainable environmental solution.

EVs WILL be our future. Compared to electric motors, internal combustion engines (ICE) are inefficient, costlier to build and maintain, and have a shorter lifespan. That said, battery tech has not achieved the maturity needed to dispense with the ICE.

EV’s are going to work for some people some of the time. They are not the only thing the near future (nxt 50 yr)of individual transportation will contain. Hydrogen will be big, and ICE will definitely remain. Trains, trucks and farm equipment will use diesel for decades.

Iran Uses Rape to Enforce Women’s Modesty

Le président de Toyota a déclaré qu'une majorité silencieuse de gens de l'industrie automobile se demandent si les véhicules électriques doivent être poursuivis exclusivement comme l'avenir des voitures

Makes sense. A real debate needs to take place.

They shouldn't. It should be mostly hybrid cars.

Some good common sense there. Now, if only the follow it.

His company was one of the first to get rid of diesel and some petrol models. I'm sticking with diesel for as long as possible.

Hydrogen Powered Logistics.

Electricity used by EV in the 3rd world are generated by by non renewable energy sources such ascoal, diesel, nuclear plant. Toyota are true to their mission and consistent.

Thank you sir

Future eco disaster

I sure as hell don’t want one. The tech is changing fast, and making cars obsolete at a more rapid pace, too. They’re too expensive to be considered disposable.

Listen to those with business sense instead of government bureaucrats with no practical experience and no sense who will be out of office when their shortsighted policies fail...😳

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

and the vocal majority don't want that crap

Our government doesn’t believe in common sense. They just push their pet projects to line their pockets.

We should definitely stop oil as our main source of automobile fuel.. if not ev we need another innovation idea...

EV in a nordic climate is prone to disaster !

Finally, someone sees the reality of the future.

The government should be pushing hybrids by 2035. This is much more doable and does not require a massive new infrastructure.

I wonder why they would have to be silent?

Thank God!

Are they all finally getting it? The future cannot be a battery

lagoodseny Ask Honda, they have long opted for various solutions, hydrogen, electric, hybrid.

It simply cannot work. There are too many rural areas that require more miles to get to things, does not have infrastructure to support it and then climate in some places really is not conducive to making this work for everyone.

You will never be able to charge an EV in 5 minutes. Not to mention the infrastructure needed for mass scaling charging is decades away if ever. There’s a place for ev’s but petro cars will always have greater demand
