Will Electric Vehicles Crash The Grid? via insideevs.com

That's important because those states have the most aggressive timelines to transition to an all-electric fleet, so if they can provide enough power to handle the increased demand, other states should be able to also.

We spoke to both Cahill and Markowitz for about thirty minutes each, so the video is about an hour long. We've added chapters for those that want to skip around and watch select topics. DC Fast charging stations require an extraordinary amount of power to charge multiple vehicles at once We asked both guests to explain what they believe some of the biggest challenges are, if 2035 is too aggressive of a timeline to ban combustion vehicles, and a number of other EV charging and grid-related questions.Neither of our guests seemed to indicate that they were worried about the grid crashing, or that 2035 was too soon to ban combustion vehicles.

So check out the video and let us know your thoughts. This has been a hot topic of discussion for many years now. Now that we've heard from the people in charge of providing us the power to charge our EVs, can we finally put the concerns to rest now? As always, leave your comments below; we want to hear your opinions as well.

Interesting... However, there's a huge difference between charging a 7500 lb weighing truck and charging a light EV. kWh demand per person carried tends to go up with the whole SUV and truck on batteries trend.

You will probably see more dynamic pricing in the future to prevent unnecessary charging activity at peak times. This is no substantial technical challenge to implement and will solve 'the problem' ...

I hate that the 'article' is just a teaser to watch a video. How about a 10 minute read for those that don't want to invest an hour watching?

tommolog BOTH POLITICALLY controlled Public Power AUTHORITY employees. Come on Tom, ask ConEd or PG&E or some of the other critical suppliers, especially to areas where grids are already congested. NYPA can't even provide the NYS Thruway--a sister Public Authority-- to install chargers.

EV charging load is very flexible and can take place while you sleep. Lots of grid capacity during that time, allowing years of EV growth. The grid will be upgraded over time, just like it was done for TVs, AC, etc. years ago.

Yea and no. Level 1 and 2 won't stress the grid. Now IMHO level 3 fast dc charging stations should have on-site storage. 1mwh of storage at least. If more chargers at station. More storage needed.

No

Most often it's extreme weather that does that. ...in which case, a v2g EV can be lifesaving

tommolog Great video, Tom! As you know, the grid continues to evolve toward renewable energy, so today's grid will not have to service the future's EVs. Even when all new car sales are electric, fossils will still make up a large portion of cars on the road.

tommolog Will the grid, or any part of it crash EVs, or slow down their adoption? Seeing and communicating challenges does not make one a critic or a naysayer to EVs.

Check out how many HotTubs are running 24/7/365.... Useless waste of power!
