China has become the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, with some of its models are coming to Australia in the new year, bringing a more-attractive price tag for Australian consumers.

By comparison, Australia is lagging behind, despite similar government subsidies being introduced here.Currently, all states and territories offer some form of purchase incentives to facilitate sales. From January to November, 2.9 per cent of all cars sold in Australia were battery EVs, according to data from the automotive industry peak body Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries .

China's top leaders have been trying to carve out the country as a market leader in the global EV industry. BYD is China's largest carmaker and a major battery manufacturer, while MG is backed by Chinese state-owned car company SAIC Motor. "We do anticipate prices [will] become a little bit more competitive in the coming years as there's more and more [electric] vehicles on the road."Mr Todd said EVDirect was bringing a light SUV and a sedan onto the market in early 2023.

"The cost of manufacturing an EV in China is lower than other countries, given locally made batteries, cheaper labour costs and a comprehensive supply chain for all the car components," he explained. She said federal and some state governments' emission reduction targets, consumer willingness and improved charging availability had laid the foundation for an acceleration in EV uptake.

It would be the last thing in the world I would buy

Made with cobalt from the blood, sweat and tears of slaves.

An reality? Was this written by an English speaking individual?

Waste of money.

I would prefer to buy an Australian made EV and know it supports local economy and industrialisation than an imported car which offers no prosperity for our own industry.

Hope the electric MG is more reliable than its petrol sibling

If you have a ding in your Tesla repairs cannot be started until Tesla specialists come and make the battery safe. Repairs are not allowed on the high voltage system until its made safe.

Reliability is big question when things are prepared in China.

Some good news out of China all they need now is a named monster truck Electric Vehicle to replace the monster truck EGO VEHICLES

In case people are swallowing US propaganda about slave labor. Watch this.

No

All junk stick them up your A$$$

Is anybody checking for child/slave labour in the Chinese supply chains? Do we care, as long as the cars are cheap?

Hey, how about the most American made WV in the world, aka Tesla Instead you’ll prop up China Unreal bias.

when ya buy one. buy a petrol generator at the same time and put it in the boot. 1 Liter of petrol will charge the battery fully. so you get 500 klm to the liter of petrol

why are they still making EV cars look like petrol cars ? They need a rethink. a tuk tuk size car will go over 1,200 klms with one charge ,2 seaters . Seems like they did the same in 1900 , kept the wagon look , sacked the horses

But where are the MicroEVs with 1/2 the environmental impact of a Tesla We need an environmental tax on all new vehicles $2000 for diesel 4wd $200 Tesla $120 MicroEVs Bowenchris theDrum TheProjectTV RNbreakfast

A reality

Is ABC getting paid for this? Watching this same story on your News show yesterday I was expecting to see an ADVERTISMENT banner because it wasn’t news as much as an ad for China and one brand in particular.

News, or NZE propaganda? 4CentABC richwal94842899

NO Chines EVER

Why not do some research into where the cobalt comes from for these electric vehicles? Mostly Chinese run mines in the DRC. These companies are out to make $$ not save the planet and the good old abc gives them free advertising, paid for by Aussie taxpayer.

. . EVs are for rich wnkers. .

. . The grid is 80% fossil fuel. EVs are powered by fossil fuels. Solar panels don't make an EV green. You could plug the solar into the grid as well - so allocating it to your EV doesn't reduce total emissions. It's just virtue signalling truck accounting. Fix the grid first.

Or, imagine this... Bring back manufacturing in Australia so we can make our own EVs, batteries, solar panels, etc since we have the mineral wealth and knowledgeable wealth to do it.

No, I am not 'itching to buy' a vehicle someone can switch off remotely. I think I'll keep my car until it's dead, thanks.

Damn. Talking about $49,000 as affordable. Where's the extra $20k of value between this an a $29k Corolla? I'm not going save $20k in fuel for about 7 years by which time I'd most likely be moving it on.

ahhh so this will be the new narrative! abc doesnt like tesla so promoting chinese EVs after Penny's visit is the new abc rave? so transparent! obvious!

ClimateScam FollowTheMoney

Please don't promote these rubbish cars, the will end up as landfill a lot sooner than a quality built car, they are dangerous junk.

If you think buying a battery powered car is going to help reduce climate change, perhaps I could interest you in a share in an emu farm?

interesting that the US banned chinese 5G but allowed EVs

Time for petrol stations to start planning to convert to battery swap stations using battery generated power Most would prefer to drive there ,get a charged battery swapped in minutes at a reasonable costs of $10. Conveniently affordable.

At what cost to the environment? We need an embedded carbon tariff like EU is about to introduce

Pity the logo 'Made in China' = cheap garbage.

need to improve their service offering... MG EV is a better overall choice in this price point , for now.

Let's hope the cars last longer then the solar panels they make

No

In addition to monitoring you, China's electric cars will naturally catch fire. You can go and see how Chinese people use electric vehicles. In order to please China, the Labor Party treats the lives of Australians as experiments.

We’ve got enough cheap Chinese crap over here thanks🤮

soon an itching angle from cold war mentality - don't buy any chinese made products as they all have built in spy chips...let's raise tariff to compete then they sacrifice their poor citizens pocket, sorry tesla was also made in china

IF Elc Cars R so good, WHY do they need taxpayer subsidies? Is it because they wouldn’t sell on their merit?

Joe Biden does not like the fact that Tesla is not unionised. He obviously wants to destroy the sole successful car manufacturer the U.S. has.

Tesla has been leading the world in this technology and has a large factory in China. The more automated the industry becomes the less relevant labor costs are, so I believe Tesla will continue to dominate although China is now producing many Tesla copies.

An reality? 😅
