The rotary is back, but it's being used in a very different way than it was in past Mazda sports cars.

the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV made its official debut at the Brussels Motor Show. Initially launched in 2020, the MX-30 is the model that led the charge—no pun intended—for Mazda's planned transition to electric vehicles. While we appreciate most of what the MX-30 has to offer,. According to Mazda, based on their own research the average commuter only travels 30 miles a day total, thus 100 miles is plenty.

It looks like Mazda understands the MX-30's shortcomings and is addressing it in the form of a hybrid with a unique approach to address range. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is a PHEV that employs a rotary engine as a range extender. Technically, when running on pure battery power the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV has just over half the range of the BEV MX-30, but that is where a small displacement rotary comes in.

If we ever get our hands on one, we'll be sure to test out that claim. However, for now it appears that this version of the MX-30 is not going to reach the North American market. Mazda has told us that when it comes to the states it wants toThe MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV offers up three different driving modes: Normal, EV, and Charge. Speaking of, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV supports fast charging so ownersbe able to top off the small 17.

Mazda is also offering the MX-30 PHEV in an"Edition R" trim which sees the exterior and some interior panels sprayed with Maroon Rouge Metallic paint which is a throwback to the roof color of Mazda's first passenger vehicle, the R360 coupe. The Edition R also features several rotary-themed motifs and emblems throughout its cabin.

I feel like this EV craze is driving full speed into a stone wall of reality. It takes a minimum of 20 years to bring a major power station online, but the current rate of EV production will exhaust that capacity in just a few months. California already can not meet EV demands.

The rotary sadly isn’t the motor, it’s essentially an alternator or range extender
