Travellers face severe delays as planes, trains and cars are halted due to snowstorms and high winds, as temperatures plummet to -20C

Thousands of travellers have swarmed an airport in South Korea trying to leave a holiday island after hundreds of flights were cancelled by cold weather gripping east Asia.

The island had seen more than 19cm of snow since Tuesday morning, while another island in the country's east reported 70cm ., one man was killed by a falling tree, officials said, and two deaths in the northern prefecture of Niigata were being investigated in connection with the cold weather. Rescuers braved wind-whipped waters to continue the search for 22 crew members after a 6,551-ton cargo ship sank in the early hours of Wednesday, around 93 miles south of Jeju island.Heavy snow is expected to reach greater Seoul from late Wednesday to Thursday afternoon, according to the Safety Ministry.
