A man who was spotted by police on Christmas morning driving in reverse from the Charlottetown tent encampment in a stolen motor vehicle has been sentenced to four months in jail.

John David Reid, 33, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Jan. 27 in provincial court in Charlottetown for possession of stolen property valued at more than $5,000. - Terrence McEachern/SaltWire Network fileCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

Reid told police that Dec. 25 was the only time he drove the stolen Toyota Corolla. However, police obtained video footage from Ken's Corner that showed Reid driving the stolen vehicle on Dec. 23. Video footage from the Charlottetown Outreach Centre on Euston Street also showed Reid driving the vehicle the following day on Dec. 24. That video footage was corroborated by police E-Watch cameras and licence plate recognition software, said Murphy.

Reid's mother was in court for sentencing. She submitted a letter to the court in support of her son. Lantz sentenced Reid to four months in jail. He was given 51 days of enhanced credit of 1.5 days for each day in custody since his Dec. 25 arrest, leaving 69 days to serve. Lantz also sentenced Reid to 12 months of probation, which includes a condition that he pay $250 in restitution.
