Business Post learned that last year the EU told the Irish government it couldn't legislate on its own for a 2030 ban on internal combustion engine vehicles

The government has dropped plans to legislate for the banning of new fossil fuel car sales by 2030, the Business Post can reveal.

The proposal was included in the programme for government in summer 2020. The draft heads of a bill which would have embedded the 2030 ban in law had previously been published by Richard Bruton, the former minister for the environment.
