One big barrier for drivers switching from gas to electric cars is public access to charging stations, but Ottawa may soon have more places to plug in.

Throughout the city, there are some electric vehicle charging station at on-street parking spaces – like one on Beechwood Avenue.“We need to have many more across the city if we are serious in terms of accommodating the future,” Coun. Rawlson King said.

“We know that electric vehicles are going to be very important if we want to fight climate change. One of the challenges that we know exists in Ontario is that there are not enough charging station,” he says. “You want to give people the opportunity to be able to plug in when they’re doing their shopping, when they’re doing their groceries, when they’re accessing services – wherever they are,” says King.

Could you imagine if gasoline cars were so efficient that there was a need for a gas pump at every parking space?

You got bigger fish to fry. The roads situation is dismal. Drugs/alcohol are rampant on our streets few steps from parliament, shuttered stores that invite crime & you are worried about plugging a car If I am a tourist the last place I want is to visit is Ottawa. Clean the city

Not any better than gas environmentally since the batteries have to be mined using cheap labor.

Are those charging stations hooked up to renewable resources? Where does the 'charge' come from?

Just want to point out the 2 charging stations at MEC were broken this weekend.

No No its the distain for thinking combustion engines is what's causing the issues. lol Fully electric cars are crap.

Ott hydro laughing their ass off,

Easy solution, just pick up a generator and put it in the trunk, you could easily access gas stations to refuel. I must be a genius

But won’t the on street charging stations block the bike lanes?

More liberal propaganda click bate please send reporters out to find real issues please 🙏

The ancient grid wont even keep up with the demand right now though. You're pretending to be an olympic sprinter before knowing how to walk.

And taxpayers have to foot the bill? No thanks!

Seriously. We have people living on the streets of Ottawa. Food Banks cannot keep up with demand. And we want to put up charging machines.

Who pays for the hydro?

Hahaha this is all talk by some leftist councilman. It’s not gonna happen for years. Good luck. Too many logistics and red tape to hop through. Hahaha first big hurdle is there is no grid for it hahahahaha

And the styrofoam constructs on some models size proximity to ground go over a speed bump? Snob heap slush

Oh, and I thought it was the $75,000 price tag, the hours it takes to charge, decreased battery life in cold weather, and inability to drive long distances.

The biggest barrier to electric vehicles in Ottawa is the cold Winter weather that reduces vehicle range by an average of 20%.

That’s a case of putting the cart before the horse.
