Shhh kiwi's aren't allowed to know what the communists have planned until they're locked and loaded

nz is running short of electricity - so yet another good idea

Car rego & 3rd Party ins COULD be levied at the pump as a fuel surcharge. Profligate drivers & those with juice-guzzlers pay more for privilege. The 'prestige' of a heavy saloon or 4WD passenger-truck comes at a greater penalty. As with GST, input tax credits apply for business.

New Zealand is still a country run by adults using commonsense in the national interest.....they don't just kick our arse at Rugby.

How many cars in NZ? Double digits yet

Didn't France do something like this.... Yeah that hasn't worked out well for them

Wow a proactive government wonder what that would be like?

Great for a country with shorter distances to travel and heaps of feneration opportunities. Go for it.

peasley_mark Could they just annex us? CmonNewZealand

Stupid for a country who relies so heavily from getting around using a car. Trips between major towns and cities being outside the range of electric vehicles makes this a ludicrous idea

jacindaardern and winstonpeters will probably decide this in secret and tell us about it later without considering the consequences ! MigrationPact oilandgas

Wouldn't removing taxes on EV's make adoption easier at the same time as not penalising lower income brackets?

Electric are a fail

gotta get that money to give to 'sovereign' countries some how (cue that oprah meme)

Before NZ applies the tax it should do a life cycle analysis to make sure an EV is a more sustainable solution. It may result in worse outcome, especially when you consider the source of E for the EV and the energy and environmental footprint of battery manufacture and disposal

Virtue signalling exercise - why not Stop Tourism! All those fuel guzzling planes & coaches & people wrecking the environment!

MSMWatchdog2013 Once again NZ is way ahead of Oz.

What could possibly go wrong.

on top of the 2 1/2 bucks for petrol? f.... off!

HEB2205 What a pity Australia isn’t a progressive forward thinking country like New Zealand.

Hahaha the creation, recharging and life span of electric cars spews more CO2 than petrol cars and they only go a hundred or 2 km before they need charging or click over to petrol. Good luck with that NZ.

Sounds a bit like what’s going on in France, how did that work out

Do you people realise where lithium and copper come from and the refining process of them?

This would guarantee a one term government

Sounds like a plan.... Australia? (Probably not... Since the LNP coalition is in bed with coal

Another attack on the working class

I guarantee electric cars in NZ are taxed up the clacker. This is all about getting more tax out of the public.

Because that worked out so well on the smokers....just means the lower social economic people will be hit the hardest.... well done NZ 🕴️👏👏👏👏 well done 🙄

Everyone is not rich like politicians get real

Wouldn't work in Australia. Cynics would think its leftie virtue signalling as they prefer to keep paying for their fuel

Increase taxes on the people that can least afford to increase expenses or change vehicles? It’s a labour government there isn’t it?

You'd expect that from their leader

😂🤦‍♀️

How did that go in France? Yellow vests coming to NZ?
