To get the lowdown on dependability, we asked drivers if their cars had suffered any faults and, if so, in which areas. More importantly, we got people to tell us how long any problems kept cars off the road, and how much they had to pay for them to be put right.
The models that suffered the fewest problems and were cheapest to fix gained the top ratings in the study, while those that languished in workshops for days on end and racked up expensive repair bills were given the lowest scores. Looking exclusively at the results for used cars aged six to 20 years old, we've rated the top and bottom 10 executive cars. Where relevant, our data combines information on different body types, including hatchbacks, saloons and estates.
