Like some other AEVs—the U.S. military’s hulking Assault Breacher, for example—the NM189 is compatible with mine-clearing line-charges. Rope-like explosives that the vehicle can hurl, via small rockets, in order to detonate mines and blast gaps in earthern obstacles.
The three capabilities—line-charge, dozer and excavator—make the NM189 an all-in-one breaching vehicle. It can clear a path through the mines that often comprise the outermost layer of a fortification, plow dirt into the middle layer—an anti-tank trench—then crawl onto that temporary dirt bridge in order to excavate the innermost defensive layer: a berm.
The NM189 also has a heavy machine gun. While the driver is bulldozing, the commander can man the machine gun and help other friendly forces—tanks and fighting vehicles—to suppress enemy troops holding the defensive line. The Norwegian army through 2001 acquired 22 NM189s. They equip the engineer battalion in the Norwegian army’s Brigade Nord, its sole armored formation.during a 2016 exercise with the U.S. Marine Corps in snowy Norway. As USMC M-1 tanks and wheeled fighting vehicles provided security, a pair of NM189s and a Marine Assault Breacher rolled up on an anti-tank trench and berm.
The NM189s covered each other with their machine guns as they took turns dozing dirt into the trench, then excavated the berm. Marine tanks and fighting vehicles raced through the gap.There are other approaches to breaching, of course. Ukraine’s Stryker brigade, for example,It obviously is pretty dangerous for unprotected engineers to do the same job that 40-ton armored vehicles do.
