DC’s urban planning is dumb. The city is designed to extort (that’s what the stop sign cameras, limited public parking, excessively low speed limits, increasing speed cameras esp where more folks are Econ disadvantaged , and now bus lane cameras signal). This is greed not safety.

We got busted by one of these in Italy years ago. Google said turn so we did. Neither Google nor us knew it was bus only lane. Just another money grab.

I'd like to see them do this for the bike lanes, which in many locations (e.g. 14th Street in Logan Circle) are near-continuously blocked.
What happens when people are stuck in the rightmost lane when they're caught yielding to crossing pedestrians before turning right? Bus cameras will not pick that up.

Good to see DC leading the way. Would be amazing if we did this in San Francisco. But SFMTA_Muni constantly puts drivers over transit. Need to stop in a bus lane? Just put your flashers on. Need free parking? Just find a bike lane.

NYC does this already. The cars parking in the red bus lanes made the SelectBus from Harlem to La Guardia Airport a pain. Now it works much better - the bus is faster than driving yourself or the cab.
So basically, this is a tax on Uber Eats drivers and UPS/FedEx. In my frequent observation, most of these dedicated bus lanes are empty 95% of the time. But the infrequent buses can’t really use them effectively b/c parked cops, delivery vehicles, and … buses.

You literally have to drive in the bus lane to make a right turn on many streets, particularly going west on I Street, NW. It’s safer to get in the bus lane than cut in front of a bus to make your turn.
DC has vehicles which have racked up thousands in fines (see deadly Rock Creek crash, $12,000 in fines vehicle) for other traffic infractions. How will they actually enforce this other than by mailing out fines which go unpaid?
Nobody will wanna come to DC with all these $250 red light, speeding, red painted bus lanes... Could you focus on the killings & car jackings & lootings instead? Half the folk in DC are uninsured w/fake tags anyway, so I don't expect many will pay.

DCStatehood move towards a federal takeover of the city and retrocession to Md. just moved a few months closer. The DC govt. is now relying on traffic fines and cameras to fund the budget. That should definitely bring workers back into the city center.
I'll believe the serious double-parking problem in the 600 block of Penn SE gets fixed by ticketing when I see it.
I’m all for quicker and more efficient transit options, but how will DC enforce tickets to MD, VA, or drivers with illegal temp tags? Seems like this is just another tax on law abiding residents as there is no method to ensure the penalty has a bite.
Now, that will stop any sane driver from driving & parking in bus lane… myself included. 💯💪🏾
