Raquel Natalicchio/Staff photographer, auto sales in the Houston area skyrocketed in March, even as prices and auto loan interest rates remained high.
More than 6,200 cars and 23,400 trucks were sold in the Houston region last month, according to data from TexAuto Facts Report published by Houston-based InfoNation. The sales represent a 69 percent increase for cars and an 81 percent jump for trucks compared with March 2022, as well as several thousand more than in February. National data from the first quarter of 2023 shows auto sales were up just more than 8 percent year over year.
Vehicles from U.S. car companies — which typically are more popular in Texas — fared particularly well, according to California-based Edmunds, an online automotive industry resource. GM saw U.S. sales rise nearly 16 percent year over year in the first quarter, and Ford sold more than 8 percent more vehicles nationally.
The increase may be partially due to a larger number of available vehicles after pandemic supply chain disruptions. At times in the past three years, some dealerships in the U.S. reported
