Electric vehicle experts and industry say a fuel efficiency standard will rapidly bring more EVs onto Australian roads, but they differ on how aggressive the government should pursue emissions reduction.

"It's like any new technology, the more iPhones that people had when iPhones came out, the more people that didn't have them wanted them, and this is exactly what we're going to see with a new technology like battery electric vehicles," Mr Akhtar said.

"We should have a target which is ambitious but achievable in the Australian context, given the distances we travel, given the infrastructure, given the lifestyle of people," Mr Weber said. He said achieving 10 or 20 per cent adoption rates was not the concern, but rather the last 40 per cent of people who would be slowest to shift to an EV, and that other lower emissions options needed to be available in the meantime.said it would require major developments before "late adopters" became the main concern.

Shadow Infrastructure and Transport Minister Bridget McKenzie said the government was delaying the issue.

As long as we are told to.

'Experts' are saying Australians wont have a choice. 55% emission decrease by 2030 means petrol/diesel cars/vans/trucks will be under-powered garbage. This with gas for heating/cooking, transport etc all going Electric will drive electricity demand up, doubled in a decade even.

Garage

This is pure bullshit and devoid of any scientific and mathematical proof. EV are more heavier on CO2 than most disel and petrol cars.

in your dreams

Well thats a fucking lie

This is bullshit. The cheapest EV is about $45K with a highway range of around 300km, and much, much less if you tow a small boat or trailer. For that kind of money, one can buy a medium size ICE AWD SUV with twice the range and the towing capability.

EV expert’s obviously think money grows on trees.

Or if they're about the same price as ICE cars.

I’ll never buy an EV, as I think the child and human exploitation at the cobalt mines is utterly appalling. The batteries blow up and catch fire waaay too frequently. And having a massive battery sitting right under your privates as you drive is a massive health risk.

Very good to see. We have to transition to clean transportation ASAP.

And…, Bowenchris ensures there will be no EV tax as per Victoria… auspol Auspol2023

😂😂😂😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡🤡

Nope . No way are we going to let them turn us off .

Let's look past new EV's, and look at the second hand market. What's a battery EV worth with a worn out battery, is it financially viable to replace it?.

Translated: Tax and penalise people enough so the only thing they can afford is public transport or EV's

CO2 is life. CO2 is greening Earth. CO2 has NEVER been shown to drive climate I love CO2, more please.

Electric vehicle advocates say whatever they're paid to say.

Forget it. The infrastructure will fail as most does in Australia. Look at the electricity, the gas and the internet and phone systems. What a joke ! Corporates and government just bleeding the people. 🇦🇺 so far behind.

Ice cream experts say Australians will rapidly consume ice creams. As long as earth warms due to climate change

Australia says “I can’t be bothered waiting for my batteries to charge.. so no”

Range to weight ratio issue still outstanding

. Diverting our tax money to EV manufacturers is sickening. Creating 'CO2 standards' will NOT produce a single extra EV. It will NOT reduce global emmiasions at all. EV distribution is a zero-sum game. If more EVs come to Aust, less go to other countries. This is PROFIT MITIV

Watch out scare mungering again , biased government funded entity.. where's the headlines on the racist sexist senator Thorpe... oh that's right goes against the yes vote.!

Why would a car designed for European/US markets have different emissions to a car sent to Australia, particularly given market share? It makes no economic sense to do that. Seems more like an exercise in paperwork, not emissions reduction.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! EVs are the biggest con. Why would I want to pay twice the money, or get half the car I have, to then have to wait hours for it to charge? Make EVs with equivalent cost and convenience, and I would consider buying one!

2nd hand EV cars will be worthless. People will learn the hard way..

the average cost of an EV is from $60k to $100k. Im sure struggling families cant afford this, but hey as long as we get the co2 standard right all is well eh?

It’s more about price and competing with the secondhand car market. I’m not going to buy anything just to make Albanese feel warm and fuzzy

In other words Australians will buy EV’s when the government creates an impossible standard for ICE’s, making them illegal. How about a standard for the highly toxic EV batteries?

The electricity grid is at capacity. Queensland is selling coal fired power to South Australia and Victoria as the renewables of those states aren’t cutting it. Load shedding is commonplace. Charging even more vehicles makes no sense until better infrastructure is constructed.

Expert ABC advocates? Typical Their ABC agenda story. I do think that electric cars are a good idea however & should be up to consumers to purchase without government bullying. No having sufficient power to run them in the next 30 years is a problem though.

The LNP and Tony Abbott destroyed Auto industry in Australia. Hybrid cars were being made right here before an Ex-PM with 7 portfolios had no time to either work out an EV strategy/renewable energy. There has to be phased transition. You can't jump from frying pan into the fire.

It sounds like WE won't have a choice!

What do the ‘EV experts say about the electricity grid’s capacity to take on the vast strain?

In the end, it’s a complete lie that humans can control the climate on planet earth using their CO2 emissions. ClimateScam bowenchris

Toyota is going hydrogen combustion, EV's will die out quickly.

Yeah no. Don’t underestimate the average Australians willingness to jump head first into EVs.

EV experts with ‘skin in the game’ leaning on Government to lean on hard working Australians.

Don’t reinvent the wheel! Just adopt the entirely reasonable, workable EU standards and get on with it!

As long as they are forced to.

EV ‘experts’ are salespeople and smell government $$$$

The magic of capitalism is once a good product is available in sufficient numbers it doesn't matter what the experts say.

“as long as the government gets its CO2 standard right” These ‘experts’ mean - as long as government makes ICE cars unaffordable

Eat the bugz, own nothing, be happy.

Its the hilux and ranger which explain Australia’s standards on fuel.

Who are the experts?

Nonsense, most Aussies can't afford or even get finance to buy a new $25k petrol car. How the f**k will they afford an EV?

So EV vehicles to be eventually normalized? Well maybe. It'll have a huge impact on electricity usage with recharging every 24 hrs. A mobile phone is one thing to charge but an EV battery A massive strain on the grid. And we cant figure out how to run a green power station yet?

Ha ha, EV Experts promoting EVs Who'd have guessed they'd say good stuff But it's all BS and I, as an electrical engineer, won't buy one and get short range, long recharge and huge price to then charge from coal power.

EV strategy hopes to deliver fuel savings to benefit rural AustraliansRural Australians deserve the benefits of fuel savings that electric vehicles provide and the government’s EV strategy will deliver this opportunity, says Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King. “I want country people to have the opportunity of the fuel savings that electric vehicles bring and this is really what this electric vehicle strategy is about,” Ms King said at a press conference. “Making sure we’re rolling out the charging infrastructure, we’re providing that opportunity, making sure that we’ve got incentives in place for people to be able to get electric vehicles. “But making sure we’ve got the choice here in this country of the range of electric vehicles that other countries have.” Good luck with that Just a pity regional roads funding reduced to pay for city roads /rail crossings /freeways /tunnels/rail yet regional roads are the worst in history. Some Victorian roads now 60kmh because unsafe. Why is it Tasmanian/WA engineers build roads that last but no one else? Doling out more money, for less reliable power that is more inconvenient to use. Genius.
