TADA formed in 2012 when the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association and the Ontario Automobile Dealers Association merged. Frank Notte, director of government relations at the Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario, said that in order to keep things simple, the two associations changed Toronto to Trillium — the official flower of Ontario — and a new name was born.
“We thought, ‘once the pandemic storm passes, we’ll reassess [the name],’” Notte said. “We thought it was time to take a look at what happened during the pandemic as a whole, and that was one of the things that stood out.” Notte said pointed out that most other provincial dealer associations — and state associations in America — have their province’s or state’s name in the title.
The task force thought “motor vehicle” is all-encompassing and doesn’t just represent the internal-combustion engine, but electric motors — and recreational and all-terrain vehicles — as well. And, Notte said, members found that automakers in their dealer service and sales agreements with dealerships referring to them as “retailers” because they sell more than just vehicles and service them, too.
