Also at risk is the potential move of hundreds of jobs Stellantis was to add to its Automotive Research and Development Centre in Windsor.

There’s been progress made between Ottawa and the NextStar partners, Stellantis and LG Energy Solution, sources have told the Star, but public subsidies for the module portion appear to be a stumbling block. The entire $5-billion project was in jeopardy at one point, according to those sources.

Having that portion of the Windsor facility, and the hundreds of jobs that go with it, move across the border “could turn into a public relations nightmare for both the provincial and federal governments,” said Goncalves. He said international media will see it as Ottawa “going back on its word,” and other jurisdictions — including U.S. states — competing for the same future investments in a critical new industry will use that as ammunition in their marketing pitches.

He said he’s in daily contact with Minister Champagne but that he couldn’t reveal details: “I want to be very careful what I say, at a critical point right now.”Article content “It creates economic development,” he said. “That town , before we took office, was hurting.
