Ward 32 councillor Marius de Vos said the ditch has been open for almost a year and an accident was caused a month ago.
“There’s traffic congestion along this road every morning. You would hate to use the street in the mornings. There was a contractor working on the site to unblock the stormwater drainage system, but all of a sudden they disappeared without completing the job,” explained Marius. He mentioned that he is now going to put pressure on the Roads and Stormwater Department to resolve the issue.
“This hole is posing danger to motorists. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and I must do something about it. The metro has to hire a contractor that will speed up the process of fixing the stormwater drainage and close the hole,” stated Marius.He added that the metro must hire contractors with the necessary tools to work and expertise to fix the stormwater drainage systems.
“There’s a lack of routine maintenance on stormwater drains by Roads and Stormwater depots that has caused the system to clog up. Blocked stormwater drains are causing flash floods on the roads under heavy rain, hence the disintegration of the road network in low-lying areas across the ward,” expressed Marius.
