The road was closed for a number of hours after the smash.

Emergency services were called to Halliwell Road around 3am to reports that two cars had been involved in a smash. Two people had to be cut from the vehicles by firefighters.

Both were rushed to hospital, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed. The road was taped off for more than six hours after the collision, having reopened just after 10am.A GMFRS spokesperson said: "At around 3am on Saturday 8 July, firefighters were called out to a road traffic collision on Halliwell Road, Bolton. Two fire engines from Bolton Central and a technical rescue unit from Leigh quickly attended the scene where two cars had collided.

"Two casualties were freed from the vehicles by firefighters using spreading and cutting equipment. They were then both taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters were in attendance for 40 minutes."For more of today's top stories click here.
