Toyota has announced a technological breakthrough in batteries, but questions have been raised over the company's dubious EV track record.

abc.net.au/news/toyota-ev-solid-state-battery-explainer/102584144Car giant Toyota claims it has discovered a "technological breakthrough" that will allow its electric vehicles to travel more than twice as far as current models.

As the name would suggest, a solid-state battery removes this liquid and replaces it with a solid substance like ceramics or glass. "Because you're getting rid of some of the materials which actually don't actually do anything in the cells, things like the polymer separator … you can store more energy," Dr Best said.

"No one's going to introduce a device which has inferior performance to today's devices, because no one's going to want to buy those," Dr Best said. Despite lofty promises with its new battery technology, Toyota's transition towards EVs is chequered. The resistance to transition towards fully battery EVs has also been reflected in its Australian branch, with Toyota VP of Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations Sean Hanley saying the technology had not yet advanced enough.
