Full battery EVs made up 7 per cent of all new vehicle sales, but the two big ute brands of Ford Ranger and Toyota Hi-Lux remain king.

Why it matters: Australian new vehicle sales are a key indicator of the health of the economy, with July sales an all-time high for that month.

Full battery electric vehicles now make up 7 per cent of all sales of any type, led by the Tesla Model Y. Full-battery electric vehicles accounted for 7 per cent of total sales. Including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, the zero- or low-emission segment amounts to 17.9 per cent of all sales. The Tesla Model Y vehicle was the fourth-largest-selling vehicle in the market in July with 3330 sales, outstripping many petrol and diesel models. The No.1 selling vehicle was the Ford Ranger ute with 5143 sales, followed by the Toyota Hi-Lux ute with 4670 and the MG ZS at 3852.

Mr Grasso said the launch of the Grecale was not a signal that Maserati intended to expand volumes much further, or that it would shift into other mainstream markets as electric vehicles penetrated the market further.
