There are growing calls for a Temporary Exemption Certificate, which has been used at the height of the pandemic, to be re-used again to allow backlogs to be cleared and fines to be appealed

MOT backlogs in Northern Ireland mean there are no new tests available until November, it has emerged.

In 2022-23, the DVA conducted over 1.15 million vehicle tests, which is nearly 25% more than the vehicle tests carried out in 2021-22, and is the highest number ever recorded in a year. The DVA releases vehicle test appointments on a daily basis and customers are encouraged to regularly check the booking system as they may be able to change their existing appointment to a different test centre and time if a slot becomes available

“From January 2019 to January 2020, just under one million tests were carried out across Northern Ireland, but less than 200,000 tests were carried out the following year. A backlog was expected during this timeframe, but despite a record 506,000 tests carried out between September 2022 and February 2023, there are still extensive delays in MOT inspections.”

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said: “The DVA’s advice to vehicle owners who require an MOT to tax their vehicle and cannot secure a date before their MOT expires is to book the earliest available appointment and keep checking the booking system for an earlier appointment.
