Legacy is working toward finalizing a deal with noted road course racer Mike Rockenfeller as the driver of its No. 42 car in the next two races, according to sources familiar with the deal. Sources were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the moves. The upcoming races Rockenfeller is expected to compete in for Legacy are both on road courses — Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Aug. 20 at Watkins Glen International.
Gragson was first suspended by Legacy, then later indefinitely by NASCAR, after screenshots appeared to show that he liked a meme on Instagram making light of the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in May 2020. Floyd’s death drew widespread outrage after video circulated online showing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin holding his knee on Floyd’s neck as he gasped for breath. Chauvin was convicted of murder in April 2021.after the suspension had been announced.
Rockenfeller has made two previous Cup starts, both on road courses last year. In June, he teamed with Legacy co-owner Jimmie Johnson to drive in the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of NASCAR’s Garage 56 program. Even before Gragson’s suspension, Legacy was seriously contemplating replacing Gragson for next season amid his struggles in what is his first full season at the Cup level. Last week,that John Hunter Nemechek was the leading candidate to replace Gragson in 2024. With Gragson unlikely to return to Legacy due to performance reasons, combined with his subsequent suspension, it made little sense for the team to have him return to finish out his rookie season.
