Power outage at Banff Gondola left more than 300 people stranded

August 8, 2023

The RCMP had been alerted about the situation at 11:50 p.m. said media spokesperson Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, although he added the police’s role in the rescue is very limited. Altalink restored one of the lines, powering Banff and the surrounding communities in 16 minutes. That meant Banff Gondola was connected to electricity but was unable to restart its cars.

Terry Lang, meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, said Banff was battered last evening by several lightening strikes — products of a thunderstorm that lingered for unusually long in the area.
