Police believe the increase is due in part to licence-plate validation decals no longer being required as of May 2022.

West Shore RCMP say they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of uninsured vehicles in their jurisdiction over the past year.

Last month, the traffic unit issued 65 tickets for driving without vehicle insurance, up from 21 in July 2022. “Our police vehicles are equipped with automated licence-plate recognition technology,” said the traffic unit’s Cpl. Mike Jacobson. The technology “has the ability to scan licence plates while officers are patrolling and it alerts them to a vehicle that is violating driving laws within its vicinity. No insurance is among these alerts.”

The ticket for driving without vehicle insurance can come with a $598 fine and lead to the vehicle being towed. And if you are involved in collision without insurance, you could be sued and held liable for damages, police said.
