BREAKING: An off-duty Cook County police officer was shot Wednesday night on Chicago's South Side.

Just before 9 p.m., the 36-year-old was struck by gunfire that was being exchanged between two vehicles that were traveling northbound in the 4700 block of South Cicero Avenue, according to police.

The officer was struck in the elbow and lower back and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to CPD. One of the vehicles in the shootout struck another car that was traveling southbound. The vehicle lost control and crashed into the wall of a business. A suspect tried to run away from the vehicle but was taken into custody. They were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where they were listed in good condition.
