WEATHER: Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Ottawa

nvironment Canada said meteorologists were tracking a dangerous thunderstorm capable of producing flooding rain, with heavy showers and dissipating thunderstorms to continue for “a few hours more” until the weather system weakened.Significant rainfall is being reported in Ottawa since noon with many roads flooded,” Environment Canada said, noting that the area could see up to 125 mm of rain Thursday.

Over 1,000 customers were without power in the Ottawa area as of 3 p.m., according to Hydro Ottawa, with outages spanning from Rideau-Jock to Beacon Hill-Cyrville. Neighbours trying to clear the water off their street in Elmvale Acres during a rain storm that left flooding all over the city Thursday afternoon.Beth Gooding, director of the City of Ottawa’s public safety service, said in a memo to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and members of council on Thursday that the City was responding to the impacts of the severe thunderstorms, adding that there were no injuries to report.

At the peak of the storm, Gooding said Hydro Ottawa reported 24,000 customers without power, with 2,100 customers remaining without electricity as of 4 p.m.
