SUVs might not be so politically acceptable in the city these days but the boxy Grand Vitara, with its four-square stance, makes for a surprisingly useful city car - boot-mounted spare wheel apart. With minimal out-of-sight bodywork front and rear, it’s easy to park, and has the high driving position many look for. It even has selectable four-wheel drive for those out-of-town excursions. One fly in the ointment, however: the side-hinged tailgate is a pain to open in a tight parking space.
The Mercedes C-Class is a great option for a premium saloon packed with tech, while emphasising comfort. It offers several engines, both petrol and diesel. We found a 2017 diesel for £13,250 and a 2015 petrol for £11,499.
